The Lodge at Bryce Canyon

The 101 Anniversary of the National Parks is coming up quick in August and we thought there was not better tribute to that anniversary, than with a few Property Spotlights of our National Park properties. Over the past few months we’ve talked about our properties in Badlands National Park as well as Grand Canyon National Park, but this month we are turning the focus to The Lodge at Bryce Canyon in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah.

History

Established in 1923 as a national park, Bryce Canyon National Park was first discovered in the late 1800’s when it was first discovered by geographer Almon H. Thompson and popular explorer John Wesley Powell in 1872. Other settlers came to the area looking for a homestead including Ebenezer Bryce and his family. Bryce hoped moving his family from Salt Lake City to southern Utah would help his ailing wife’s poor health. Within the next few years, Bryce and his family would move on to Clifton but not without leaving an impression on the area.

Over the course of the next 50 years, this area would become a national park and the famous architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood would build the Lodge at Bryce Canyon by 1925. Underwood is also known for building the Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim and Zion Lodge. The rustic design of the main lodge and surrounding cabins adds to the natural feel of the park environment.

The Lodge

If you’ve never had a chance to visit the lodge, take a trip in on your next, or first, trip to Bryce Canyon National Park. The lodge is open from March to November, with some winter lodging possibilities as well. Visitors will have a chance to dine at the Lodge at Bryce Canyon Restaurant or the Valhalla Pizzeria and Coffee Shop. If you're looking for a complete sit down meal with your friends and family, we recommend heading to the restaurant for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. You'll have a chance to enjoy anything from the Fairyland French Toast in the morning or the Rainbow Trout at dinner. If you're looking for a quicker meal option, stop into the Valhalla Pizzeria and Coffee Shop for a bite to eat. This casual cafe has a number of different meal and beverage options available, you can learn more on the Lodge at Bryce Canyon website.

If you're looking to stay the night at the lodge, there are 4 rooms available within the lodge itself as well as additional cabins and motel rooms on the property. All of the rooms both in the lodge and around the property contain similar architecture and stylings as well as speak to the Native American culture that has a long standing history in that part of Utah.
